GSN VISTA Fellows

 

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a capacity-building effort with the Corporation for National and Community Service to address poverty in local communities in the United States through partnership with nonprofits, schools, and public service agencies. Jeff Davis, AmeriCorps VISTA Leader

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jeff Davis is a lifelong educator and former teacher at Montessori and Higher Education Environments. He has been a VISTA leader for over a year and he brings that experience to GSN as our new VISTA leader. Jeff has also served as a College Dean and Professor in Communications and Life Skills, during which time he not only taught college courses, but also helped to develop new course content and train new instructors. As an Early Childhood Teacher, he engaged students in diverse hands-on activities and ensured their success. Jeff holds a B.S. in Education from Indiana University and an M.Ed. in Distance Learning, Curriculum Design and Development from the University of Phoenix. He is an avid hiker and looks forward to his time at GSN!

 

Kathryn Allison, Rural Teacher Recruitment

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kathryn Allison was born and raised in Highlands Ranch, CO. After high school, she ventured out to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa to experience a new place and get out of her comfort zone. Kathryn graduated from Bama in May 2016, majoring in political science and international relations. Bama turned her into a huge football fan. Roll Tide! With GSN, Kathryn is currently focusing on teaching recruitment efforts in rural Colorado in conjunction with CSU-Pueblo. 

 

Melissa Muniz, Curriculum

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After graduating from Pomona High School in Arvada, Colorado, Melissa moved to Fort Collins to receive her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Colorado State University. She became a VISTA with AmeriCorps shortly after her college graduation and was introduced to Generation Schools Network. With GSN, Melissa is currently assisting in curriculum development, focusing on college and career readiness.

 

Anna Stamer, Communications

 

 

 

 

 

(Ah-nn-ah Stah-mer) Anna is originally from Bettendorf, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in communication studies and a double minor in child, adult, and family services, as well as journalism. During Anna’s time at Iowa State she was heavily involved with a dance marathon that directly raised money for the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. This past year she was also involved with the grassroots company BANGs Shoes, as an ambassador for the program. Throughout Anna’s VISTA year, she is working with various social media platforms to engage and effectively communicate with schools and community members. 

 

Natasha Patel, Expelled & At-Risk Student Services

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Natasha is originally from Dayton, OH and recently graduated from the University of Michigan where she studied biopsychology, cognition, and neuroscience and environmental studies. Some of her favorite past times include cooking, going on adventures, and being an activist for human rights campaigns. Natasha’s VISTA work includes helping GSN improve community engagement by expanding the community networks in rural Colorado and serving as liaison between GSN and Advocates participating in the EARSS grant. 

 

Corey Stegall, Better Business Bureau LIFT Program

 

 

 

 

 

 

Corey grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and eventually moved to Phoenix, AZ to attend Arizona State University. She graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She joined AmeriCorps in June 2016 in partnership with the Better Business Bureau as their LIFT Program Coordinator. At the BBB, Corey is developing and improving ways to deliver the program to schools, providing training and support, along with helping to coordinate volunteer facilitators and supporting curriculum committees.

 

Saleah Blancaflor, Student Recruitment

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saleah graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from Oklahoma State University in 2014. This will be Saleah's second year of VISTA service after a year of service as a Food Programs Coordinator VISTA with the New York State Afterschool Network. Her current VISTA role with GSN is focusing on student recruitment for BGS, event planning, and communications. 

 

Isabelle King, Curriculum

 

 

 

 

 

Isabelle was raised in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor's in Cultural Anthropology and Communications in 2015. She most recently served a public health intern at a women's medical center in Jerusalem directly before starting her VISTA project. Her VISTA role with GSN consists of curriculum support mostly associated with College & Career and Expanded Learning Time. 

 

Mary Kurt – Mason, Parent Engagement at Archuleta School District 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After a BA in Elementary Education and a BA in Special Education from Boston College, Mary pointed her pick-up truck west to begin her life on the Navajo Nation in New Mexico and Utah. After a year of working with families of children with significant disabilities, she again packed up and left for Juneau, Alaska. In Juneau, she started a program for students with significant needs in a public school on Douglas Island. 

Eventually, she and her husband brought their two young sons to Pagosa Springs, Colorado where she taught for the next 31 years. Newly retired, she is looking forward to fostering connections between parents of students with disabilities and the school system, as well as working as a teacher coach for the school district.
