On May Day a few thoughts from Development Director Kathryn Harris
There is nothing better to fight for than the education of a child. I believe that our current education system is not broken, but obsolete and what is needed is reinvention, not reform.
Public schools have always prepared half of all students for post-secondary success. From the beginning, public schools prepared half of students for college and the rest would enter blue-collar jobs that allowed them to provide for themselves and their families. What has changed is our economy. The jobs once available to unskilled workers no longer exist. In today's world, every student needs a solid foundation in reading, math as well as 21st century skills (goal setting, problem solving, project management, budgeting, negotiating, collaborating, strategizing, etc.) to succeed and earn a living wage.
